We have had several pets since we've had children who wanted them. We have had 4 dogs, and we pretty much think of cats as disposable (I know that sounds awful. Neither Jonathon or I like them, but I've decided I like them WAY better than mice or little snakes!) Halley has had 2 miniature dachshunds, Bridger has a chocolate lab, but it's Gabby that has captured our hearts. Maybe it's because she is so mellow. Maybe it's because she wouldn't mess in my house if we locked her in for a week. Maybe it's because she is so stinkin cute! Anyway, we are all completely taken with her. She is one of us, she's our family.
On Sunday I noticed that she hadn't eaten any of her dog food. Bridger is in charge of feeding the animals and I'm sure he was just thankful it was less work for him when her bowl was still full each day! (I really think she hadn't eaten since Wednesday or Thursday.) We were having salmon for dinner that night and I gave her a chunk and she scarfed it down, so I thought she was being picky because we had bought a different brand of dog food. I figured when she got hungry enough she would eat. Well on Monday morning she was shaky and still hadn't eaten. I got the leftover salmon out of the fridge and she wouldn't eat it, then I started to worry. I took her right over to the vet. His first thought was that she was pregnant. This was hilarious to me because we've tried several times to breed her and she's too stingy...wouldn't give it up! So he kept her to do an x-ray. Later that afternoon he called and said he didn't see puppies (their skeletons only show up if they are 52 days along), and he thought it would be best for her to open her up and make sure it wasn't infection. They did surgery the next day and she had 5 LBS!!! of infection in her uterus! I was stunned, and felt so guilty! She ended up with a hysterectomy and was at the vets for 3 days (you don't want to know what that cost!). She's home now, getting some lovin and recuperating. I'm not sure about this pet thing, you get so attached to them and they don't live long enough!
The vet taped this towel around her so nothing would get in the wound. There is still infection in her so we are being really cautious.

So sorry to hear about Gabby. I hope she continues to do well... Glad you cought it when you did. And I feel the same way about cats! But ours won't chase mice or snakes. He will bat around a bug for a bit, but that is all... And he is only 12. I could have 10 more years of him!!!
That is SO sad! The picture of Gabby makes me cry. Good thing that she has all of you to love her through it!
We have 2 dogs. I dont let them in the house. Titus sneaks them in occasionally. I only like our Maggie. I would be sad if she got sick. I hate cats. They are creepy and selfish! Your Gabby looks sweet. I hope she gets better!
Ohhh, poor puppy! I love that picture of her on the rocks by the water . . . what a great photo . . . she's so cute!
Ohhh... that is sad news. You are a good momma to your poor puppy! I would've forked up the money for the vet too.
I'm glad there is another Dean woman besides Jodi and me that allows house pets! Who knew you were so tender hearted? ;)
